Summary: Not for Beginners, but Rich in Possibilities
Comment: If you are an intermediate-level guitar player who do not use a pick, and if you always wondered if it was possible to play Gershwin on guitar -- this is your book.
I would especially recommend this book for classical guitar players who want to switch over to jazz but are frustrated by the single-note acrobatics that most jazz-guitar scores require. These 15 melodies transcribed for guitar are rich in harmonies and tonality that come pretty close to doing full justice to Gershwin's timeless magic.
I am especially taken by the arrangements for "Oh, Lady Be Good," "Summertime," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," and the power-combo, "I Got Rhythm/Fascinating Rhythm."
Let me warn again that this is not an easy beginner's book to rip through. All pieces require patient study of the intricate lead and bass lines, and fantastic chords. I gave myself a whole year to master it at a level that would satisfy me. I know the effort would be worth the result.
The book mercifully comes with a CD that has all the 15 pieces played by Howard Morgen himself. Although Morgen's playing on a steel-string electric guitar is not top-of-the-line concert material, he still plays the pieces accurately and with enough flare to whip up your appetite to the same. I am biased that it would have sounded ten times better if he played them on a fine nylon-string classical.
I loved this book so much I am also intending to buy his other collection on Duke Ellington -- that is, whenever I am through with this thin but demanding and challenging volume.
The world of guitar players owe Morgen a special thanks for tackling the ardous task of arranging Gershwin for guitar. We should reward him with our patronage.
