Summary: Good overview for programmers looking into Java development
Comment: I have nearly finishing reading this book and I find it to be a good overall tutorial on Java. I have read other Java books that either got very deep into the nitty gritty of the language without giving the reader time to understand how to develop an application or that skimmed the surface of the language without giving the reader a clear concept of how to use the language. This book, although not a great Java book, is a good introduction book for individuals who have some programming background and want understand how a Java program is put together. The book starts off by giving program examples and then disecting these examples (although the examples are very simple) by explaining why each line was introduced. This allowed me to look at other Java applications (even though I had no prior object oriented programming experience) and understand what was going on and why. This is a good book to add to your collection of Java books, but should not be your only Java book.

Summary: The Easiest Way to Learn Java Applets.
Comment: I've been in continous search for books and tutorials with regards to java applet programming for the web and found them all quite difficult to understand. Until I stumbled with this one book and started reading it... and man that was easy! This book is very organized complete w/ visual examples and brief but straight-to-the-point explanations which makes it fun to read and never get bored.

Summary: Does not deliver
Comment: As far as actually teaching you how to program in java i think that this book fails. The programming that it shows you is only very basic and you are never show how to develop it better or farther. It would be a decent reference book since most of the API is in the appendix of the book. Mostly i just felt as though it was an advertisement for more of sybex's books since all they did was take chapters from 4 of their other books.
