Summary: baking is good therapy :)
Comment: I love this book. I am a big fan of Nigella's books, and although I am not really a "baker" - more of a home gourmet cook- I have really got an affectionate place in my heart for baking. This book is great, because when I have the urge to bake, or I need to bake something quick to take over to someone's house, or I want an intricate recipe to spend the afternoon making - this book satisfies my every mood. The easy almond cake is just that, and was so worth buying a springform pan for - looks as impressive as heck and is so quick ;) . Tonight I came home and forty five minutes later I had wonderful rose scented madeleines that were already cooked! What I like about Nigella Lawson is that she understands that so many people have busy lifestyles and that if every recipe that we see for baking is intricate and complicated and time consuming that we just won't do it - we will get too discouraged. There are simple, classic and delicious baked goods that one can make well and make often, and there are some spectacular recipes when you want to pull out all the stops. Oh, and since I didn't really mention it, there are plenty of savory baked goods in this book, as well as some lovely baked things for children. I just haven't made these ones - yet...
Buy it, don't be scared, baking is fun, and yes, it can be truly therapeutic (especially yeasty breads and things you can pound)

Summary: My First "British" Cookbook
Comment: I must admit that I am an "American Cookbook Snob" and I literally refused to even look at this book until my sister urged me to do so. Our satellite TV company does not get the Style Channel, so I am unable to see Nigella's show that my sister talks and talks about. Obviously, I gave the book a try (thanks to my public library) and I was very pleasantly surprised.

Ms. Lawson writes about food as if she is writing you a personal letter from her kitchen. She really does make the food sound attractive and "lures" you into baking something. . . anything! In addition, as a mother, I was extremely impressed at how often she talks about her daughter(s) and the joy she has with them in the kitchen - that was great to read. Most of the baking is divine. However, the cooking (savory) section is a bit too Brit for my taste; our family just doesn't eat that kind of food, but if you like that kind of stuff I'm sure you'd enjoy her recipes.

I am purchasing this book for myself for Christmas simply because those cupcakes and Madeira cake (without Maderia!) sound just too delicious to pass up.

Summary: Love this one!
Comment: Like so many food lovers, I love Nigella's shows and books, and this is my favorite of hers after Forever Summer. However, this book has gotten quite a bit of flack for inacuracies in measurements and sometimes people complain about certain recipes lacking sweetness.
Believe me, you can chalk the latter complaint up to cultural differences! I have lived in Europe for several years and Americans tend to use A LOT more sugar in their desserts than Europeans. If this is the case with you, go ahead and put in some extra sugar. I, myself, have been quite satisfied with all of the recipes I've tried.
I love the Lemon Syrup Loaf Cake (so simple), the Dense Chocolate Loaf Cake, Fairy Cakes and Lily's Scones. And let's not forget the savory recipes here. The Pizza Rustica is fantastic, as is the Spinach and Sausage Pie.
I love the book but it is truly baffling that it costs the same amount as her next book, Nigella Bites. This one has a greater number of recipes and the recipes are way more interesting than NB. If you like to bake, buy this one and your friends will never leave you alone!
