Summary: Not for Men Only
Comment: The New Father is a summary of information about parenthood during the first year of the baby's life. Unlike many books not geared specifically to men, it presents information in a concise, direct way without a great deal of context. For this reason it is much less annoying than a great number of other pregnancy/parenthood books.
I bought this book for my partner, but ended up using it a lot myself. Organized by month, the book presents a lot of information that some of my other books didn't. In the fourth month Armin A. Brott discusses temperament, presenting a table of nine temperamental traits that babies are born with and the indicators of those traits. The balance between work and family is given a lot more page space than in other books, and money issues as a possible stressor is discussed as well.
Brott could have expanded some of his topics. I'd like the book to have been longer and more complete. Some topics are barely introduced and then dropped before they are fully addressed. But like parents, no parenting book is perfect. I recommend this book for new parents of all genders.

Summary: Here are the directions you've been looking for
Comment: One minute after the birth of our son, I asked the doctor if the directions to this thing would be along shortly. But after a good laugh, I realized that I was just like every new father. I had ZERO experinece! This book is a road map pf the three most important things to consider...how do I feel, how does my wife feel, and what is the baby going through right now. It really helps you keep your senses when you fell like your world is crashing around you. It is written in simple english and is an easy read. I will most certainly pass this book along to the next friend of mine about to have a baby. My wife bought me this book as part of a 3 part series, and I'm glad she did. Which reminds me, this book is also much better that some of my wife's books I've read about this subject.

Summary: Pretty good reference
Comment: So far, I've read well into the fourth month as presented in the book, since it's broken down by months, so that you (as a father) may better understand all that is happening around you, with your baby and your partner, throughout the first year of the baby's life.
I wouldn't quote this book as the only source of information about your child: you need to talk to your partner big time, learn from friends and relatives, consult "Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5" (by American Academy Of Pediatrics) when in doubt, or with your pediatrician (when in SERIOUS doubt), and most of all, learn to read your baby's signs. You will realize that the baby starts to have a way with things: a way of crying, for example, that differs when (s)he is sick, than when (s)he wants to be held or wants to eat.
All in all, I've found "The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year" to be insightful enough, to be of use as a reference to be read before bedtime, plus it is not the type of book you need to swallow all in one chunk, but you can read it as your baby grows, which is major when you (as a new parent) cannot honestly have too much uniterrupted time for reading (or any other activity, for the matter)! :)
