Title: Upgrading and Repairing PCs: A+ Certification Study Guide (2nd Edition) by Mark Edward Soper, Scott Mueller ISBN: 0-7897-2453-7 Publisher: Que Pub. Date: March, 2001 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $34.99 |

Summary: Good info but way short of A+.
Comment: Scott Mueller is a well respected name in the computer industry and I was hoping that this book would make an excellent reference manual for the A+ classes I teach. While this book is updated to the newest exam it falls short of being the go to book I was looking for.
The information presented in the book is good and the attention to detail makes the accuracy of the book very good. However you need the have Scott's 12th Edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs as a backup to this text.
The book does covers topics like motherboards, CPUs, RAM, CMOS and BIOS, storage device, portables, safety, Operating Systems, troubleshooting and networking but the information only scratches the surface.
There are also hands-on exercises and review questions, which needs to be expanded. The cd-rom included also has a test engine and lab exercise but overall you will need other material in order to pass the exam.

Summary: WOW !!!
Comment: I read Michael Myers A+ book and though it was good, I knew I needed an additional study guide. I used the A+ Exam Cram Flash Cards, but THIS book was the absolute best study aide for passing both parts of the A+. Do not be misled, this book DOES have actual test questions on it. This is an invaluable investment if you are looking for a study aide to whatever book you have read for the A+. It is to the point, has great summaries, review questions, and what else can I say but.....WOW !!

Summary: Neither a Great Study Guide nor a Reference
Comment: I purchased this book to use more as a reference than as a study guide for A+ certification. What I discovered is that it doesn't excel as either. Sure, it covers all of the major topics associated with repairing and upgrading PCs (processors, memory, storage, motherboards, the BIOS, etc.), and I suppose it contains enough material to sufficiently prepare you for the A+ exams, but as a reference it lacks the level of detail and organization that I've grown accustomed to in other types of references.
I later purchased the 13th edition of Scott Mueller's Upgrade and Repair Guide (a much larger hardcover edition) and am pleased to say that it is an excellent reference for any PC technician or hobbyist who has ever wanted to know what every component in a PC is and how it works. The study guide, however, did not impress me and I have since given it to a family member as a gift. If you want a good reference, take a look at Mueller's 13th edition. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
