Summary: Good Overview from a Christian Perspective
Comment: Easy to read if you have a basic knowledge of English literature (no senseless academic jargon here). A good survery of the treatment of God and religion (particularly Christianity) in literature over the past two centuries. His structure leaves something to be desired; he creates artificial categories and doesn't tie the chapters together well, but individually the chapters are meaningful. He looks at a variety of authors, including Stephen Crane, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Nathaniel Hawthrone, Matthew Arnold, William Blake, and Emily Dickinson.
