Comment: This impressive work opens up the 1840s in the United States and brings the administrations of presidents Tyler and Polk vividly to life.I learned so much about the backstage policies and intentions of the government that I felt like an authoritative participant in these events. Hietala is an excellent writer and a perceptive, gifted historian. I particularly liked the chapter called "The Myths of Manifest Destiny," which deals honestly with the surface and what lies just beneath it. This is what a good history book should do. Highly recommended
