Summary: A concise but highly informative overview
Comment: For a book that clocks in under 200 pages, Peter Gross's "Entangled Evolutions" is impressively broad, surveying the process of media transformation across Eastern Europe. In sharp and readable prose, Gross examines the place of media in a democracy; the multifaceted role of state, governmental, and legal institutions; and the implications of Eastern Europe's post-communist turn to market economics. His core contention is that early hopes for democratic media in Eastern Europe were probably unrealistic. Viewed more soberly, the press and other media *have* managed to establish significant autonomy in most countries -- although powerful forces still seek to constrain that autonomy through interference and manipulation, and the media themselves remain riven by partisanship and excessive rhetoric. Gross does not move beyond a traditional liberal-democratic framework in considering the performance and potential of Eastern European media. But he is unapologetic about his commitment to this framework, and consistent in applying it to his case-studies. The result is a stimulating and highly informative book that will be of interest to scholars and students far outside the field of media studies. "Entangled Evolutions" is ideal for classroom use in courses on the media and democracy, post-communist mass media, and Eastern Europe in transition.
