Jessica is a headstrong and endearing character that is a great role model, especially for girls. Her mother's quirkiness is quite funny for both kids and adults to read about (whose mother hasn't embarrassed them at some point?). Additionally, Emma Barnes is able to write about true scientific method in a way that is both interesting and digestible for young readers. She weaves the science aspect so tightly into her often hilarious story line, that kids probably don't realize how much they are learning about science.
