Summary: A delightful book for children to learn from
Comment: I enjoyed reading this book to my brother who wanted to know about children having diabetes. He has a friend who has diabetes and wanted to know some facts about diabetes. It helped him be aware that children can be treated and that they have to be careful on what they eat. My brother now invites his friend over and has special food just for him.
I even learned about diabetes from reading this book. I did not know that children could be diagnose with diabetes. I am glad that there are treatments to help the children or adults stay healthy and live a normal life.

Rating: 3
Summary: a pretty good book for little kids
Comment: My son was 2 1/2 when he was diagnosed with diabetes. This book helped us explain what was wrong to him. I do think the book is a little outdated. With the new insulin's and now the pump, there is little reason to tell a child he cannot have a certain food. When he was diagnosed he was on regular and NPH and the dietician worked with us so that the disease would effect his life as little as possible. She really showed us how to work foods into his diet.

He has always liked this book. If you have a small child (5 or 6 or younger) this book will help you explain what is happening to them.

Rating: 2
Summary: Not up to date on type 1 diabetes treatement for kids 2003
Comment: I still read the book to my daughter who is 6 now - dx'd at age 3, but I change the wording to fit our treatment plan. The character states in the book that she "never eats sweets or candy" not even for birthdays or halloween. This is an out of date statement. Kids with diabetes do eat sweets and candies in moderation - just as all children should.
