Rating: 4
Summary: Good beginner bilingual book
Comment: The story line is a little simplistic, even for my 3-year-old son. But it has good vocabulary, and I think it will be helpful when he starts to read Spanish. In the meantime, it is helping me improve my non-native Spanish.

Summary: What Do I Do? (English/Spanish) by Norma Simon
Comment: This bilingual (English/Spanish) book is about a little Puerto Rican girl and her various play and work activities throughout one day. As the author notes:" The English and Spanish are often, but not always, direct translations of each other. Some English idioms are given in Spanish words that convey a similar meaning but are not word-for-word translations. In both languages the speech is childlike and colloquial". "The bilingual book permits a choice of language to fit a child's ability. It can also be used to introduce a second language-English phrases to the Spanish -speaking child or Spanish to the English user. But no matter what the language, the illustrations for this book and their warmth help overcome word barriers". The illustrations alternate pages of color with pages of black and white. The scene is in a city full of people of different cultures and colors. The prices at the grocery store are a bit outdated (pears for $.09?). As a licensed elementary and special education teacher I think the reading level is appropriate for baby-preschool. However, I enjoyed this book as well as my seven year old son and we both learned a lot of new Spanish words for us English speakers.
