Summary: nightmare in a CD-Rom
Comment: Good Content...But a CD rom is the worst idea ever invented for learning information in the textbook world......If you are used to reading and highlighting text forgot that with this format! The interactive parts of the e-book are nice, but are not user friendly. I spent more money on paper and ink for the printer, then the silly CD is worth. This is a terrible use of technology and should really be reevaluated by the authors and publishers..A complete nightmare for college students who have to refer back to a specific page! If I could give it a ZERO, I would!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Transformational Reading!
Comment: Culture, Difference, and Power is an e-book on CDROM by Christine Sleeter. Having the privilege of knowing and working with this wonderful scholar enabled me to pilot the e-book for an online course I was teaching for the Masters of Arts in Education program at the university, entitled Culture, Cognition, and Development. This e-book provides such a compelling and useful foundation of multiculturalism, that it is applicable as a text or supplemental reading for most every course (or person) who wants to look at the role of culture and its implications in our schools and in society. There are so many aspects of this e-book that are worth mentioning that involves both content and procedure. The interactive exercises and activities intrigued me to integrate into my online course. I am a constructivist teacher striving to use distance learning as a delivery system, but firmly believing in empowering the learner to build their own knowledge, process the information, and be able to reflect upon that learning for application. This e-book used videos, diagrams, pictures, and interactive techniques to engage the students. Having a resource that looked at and provided guidance in determining the role of culture and assisted in the exploration of the ways in which unequal power relations have been maintained, perpetuated, and encouraged in our society was useful in stimulating our online discussion and in answering the essay questions for the final assessment of the course. My students liked the multimedia approach with a variety of hands-on activities, viewing film clips of real life teachers and situations, and exploring on their own with the hypertext links. Some of my students complained that the e-book was just too interesting, for they expected to cover the assigned reading material in an hour or two, but were spending up to four and sometimes six hours, just 'wandering' through the hyperlinks, because the content of information was so fascinating. They found the e-book, not only informative, but inspirational. Besides, being an excellent resource text book that can be used within the context of pedagogy and the institution of schools and schooling, it is a tremendous source for exploring one's own concepts of culture, difference, and power.
