Comment: Last year, I wrote a scathing review of the 2003 version of this guide. Finally, I've seized my copy of the 2004 only to find the same errors that plagued last year's book: incorrect exhibition scheduling, improper museum contact information, and inconsistencies as you bounce between "Major Traveling Exhbitions" and the individual museum entries, which make up the bulk of the book.
Mermelstein, as a Times editor, should never confuse Dia:Beacon with Dia:Chelsea (especially with all the coverage her paper and Times magazine gave that place this past year), and she will find herself forever apologizing for refering to the great Conceptualist artist Sol LeWitt as Sid LeWitt. I beg the author to let me take on the role of research for next year's book, or at the very least: allow me to proofread it! (It's spelled "painting" not "painring") Also what does the phrase: "Relleu amb grises I seines" mean? Any other place, I would try to decifer this phrase-- here, I just assume it's a copy-placeholder that was never extracted before sending this book to the printer. Unfortunately, there are probably many more glaring errors that I will dicover in time.
Save your money-- check museum websites and if the website does not contain a list of upcoming exhibtions, look at their most recent press releases online. Also, a simple email to the museum will generate a much more personalized and accurate picture of what they are planning for the upcoming year. As a last resort, you can check www.gallery-guide.org the first week of every month for museum and gallery updates--however this is restricted to certain geographical areas.
