Summary: The voice behind the theory: Moscovici and social psychology
Comment: A plethora of academic reserach has, since the 1960s, been directed towards deciphering, employing and critiquing Moscovici's theory of social representation. One major stumbling block in getting to the core of the theory has been language barriers: Moscovici writes predominantly in French and there has not been a great deal of translation of his work. Although not neceesarily developing the intracies of the theory much further in this book than has already been done elsewhere, it offers the chance to have the essence of Moscovici's work explained by the man himself. In a confidently written, accessible and broad-ranging book, Moscovici lays out his beliefs that the 'social' in 'social psychology' is not merely an add-on, a tipping of the academic hat to 'contexts' or a attempt to broaden the often narrow remit of experimental work. Instead,he convincingly draws the reader into a manifesto of psychology that is socially driven, iterative and historically situated. I challenge anyone who has doubts about the credence of social approaches in the discipline of psychology to read this book and not have at least an admiration for Moscovici's agenda and substantial understanding of the relationship between knowledge and society. A good read for those interested in the history of social thought and a chance to have those smug Anglo-Saxon grins wiped off our faces by an eloquent and informative French writer.
