Summary: Inspirational, motivational play reviewed by teen.
Comment: Emlyn William's play,"The Corn Is Green", set in the a Welsh mining town at the turn of the century, expresses the joys of teaching and learning in their purest form. Miss Moffet's instruction and inspiration provides the young, ignorant miner Morgan with the tools to satisfy his insatiable thirst and passion for knowledge. Morgan's resistance and foolish decisions along the way serve to test his determination, values, and belief in himself. Parallels may be drawn with films such as "Dead Poets Society" and "The Man Without A Face", as each inspirational teacher provides a boy with knowledge, confidence, and most importantly humanity. Also, the film version of "The Corn Is Green" with Katharine Hepburn is well acted and shot on location in Wales. For further reference regarding the film, Kate Hepburn discusses her personal reaction to the play in her book ME. Every individual who loves to learn and teach will savor the deliciously inspirational words of Ms. Williams. Although fairly abscure at present, this play would make exceptional reading material for high schools--promoting a positive approach to learning for the millenium.
