Summary: An excellent tragedy
Comment: I have never much liked Othello, but then quite by chance I saw and then read this play and I had to reconsider. Desdemona is the backstairs view of Othello, the three characters Desdemona, Emilia and Bianca comparing and debating their place in the play's world and in the world at large. As things go forward and more and more comes to light, I found myself becoming more and more enthralled, all the moreso because I knew where everything must end. I still don't much like Othello, but I love Desdemona. It is perhaps the finest tragedy I have read in ages.

Rating: 4
Summary: Desdemona A Whore?
Comment: This play is an intriguing retelling of Shakespeare's "Othello" in which Desdemona is a bored young wife dabbling in prostitution and Emilia speaks in an Irish brogue. Some might call the play feminist but it is too complex for simple labels, as it addresses many other issues, including class. "Desdemona: A Play About A Handkerchief" may be too racy for high school performances, but it deserves to be read and performed. It is well written and held my attention as I followed the balance of power and the handkerchief, shifting from character to character and hand to hand.
