Summary: One of the best book about Korean democracy
Comment: This book is based on the tradition of political science elaborations of the term "democracy". And thus the author uses the discussions of 'transition' and 'consolidation' as well as 'diffusion' and the 'Third Wave'.

But the author's attempt may be unique in terms of his dealing with a non-Western or non-Latin Amercian case, that is, the South Korean case. And while he discusses this Asian case, the author seems to examine the accuracy or applicability of the above theoretical elaborations in the case tool.

After all, the author's arguments and historical characterizations seem to be very clear and accurate according to my knowedge and analyses as a Korean scholar. This is more so compared with other political science works written in English about Korean matters, which are sometimes shallow. And some of his arguments are even very innovative, and so is especially, his focus on the role of civil society in the process of Korean democratization composed of triple solidarity (students, workers and church).

The author's analysis is sometimes too summarizing because of the book's size, but I'm rather satisfied with the size of this book. This book may be very helpful for any scholar who wants to know more about the process of Korean democratization as a domestic matter than the generalizing explanations of the role of diffusion in democratization.
