Summary: Excellent Nostalgic Tale & Mystery
Comment: McCammon's Boy's Life is an excellent tale of nostalgia for the simple life of a boy growing up in small town USA combined with a mystery that protagonist 12-year-old Cory Mackenson must solve to save both his father's sanity and his own life.
Murder in a small town means that someone unsuspected must be the killer: a neighbor, friend, or even public figure. The brutal killing of a stranger coupled with a historical setting during the Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam both serve to contrast the innocence through which Cory sees the world.
Though some elements of the plot may seem somewhat outlandish--such as the hunting-down of a former Nazi prison camp figure--what really makes the book shine is its portrayal of small-town life through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy. Masterfully done with touches of imagination and magic and wonder, the story makes for an excellent read.

Summary: Young boy learns of life from series of strange events.
Comment: Robert McCammon has written one of the most heartening books in Boy's Life that may well ever be written. This tale is so enrapturing because it does remind us that we are all kids at heart and that we all wish to stay that way. The story is overwhlelming as it relates the main character's, Cory Mackenson, coming of age to his father's inablilty to shake the image of a horrific murder that almost took his own life and continues to haunt him. The cast of characters is unending with everything from an ancient "lady" to a river monster not unlike Nessie to kkk members to a heady bicycle with a mind of its own. He hits on the things that make chilhood the best. From the movies with friends to baseball to the death of the family dog, McCammon is right on. All of the emotions brought out are real and that is what makes this novel so spellbinding. It is very hard to put down and is very distraughtful after it is over. I would call this novel a tour de force but what! novel has not been called that. It is definitely one the three best novels I have ever read, and when anyone asks for a recommendation for a book to read this is always the first that I suggest because I believe that it is one that anyone can read. McCammon's descriptions can paint a picture better than any Monet and some say that is not capable out of a male writer. And, although things, places and people do change, the memories are always there to keep you company.McCammon reminds us to keep these in mind even as we grow old. This will help us to remain kids at heart.

Summary: Still Holds Up After a Decade!
Comment: I first read "Boy's Life" when it was first published over 10 years ago. I was still a young'un in college and could really relate to Cory's tale of childhood chills & thrills. I always thought "Boy's Life" was McCammon's best novel. I have often thought of this book and now with a son of my own I wanted to re-read "Boy's Life" and to capture again it's magic of youth and boyhood fantasy. I was worried though, because I began wondering if when I read again, a book that I remember so fondly, would I still view it the same and would it still have the same impact on me? I would have hated to find "Boy's Life" was something I had outgrown, or found the memory of the story and the story itself we completely different. The great news is that "Boy's Life" is still fantastic and is simply one of the greatest coming of age stories available. The magic and mystery of the novel are wonderful, and I found myself caught up once again in the goings on in the town of Zephyr. If you haven't read "Boy's Life" or were hesitant based on it being written by a "horror" writer, give this wonderful novel a chance. It is unlike anything McCammon has written, and most likely, even coming out of his semi-retirement, will remain unlike anything he will write. Also, if you have read this novel and enjoyed it, make sure you pick up Dan Simmons' "Summer of Night". "Summer of Night" is stronger in the horror department, but the feel and flow of the book is very similar to "Boy's Life".
