Comment: The title of this book tells a great deal about the angle from which Willimon addresses the subject of communion for the Christian church. The gathering of Christians to share communion is like a Sunday dinner shared week after week by the family , with the customary ritual way of doing things that makes it all feel like being at home, with your parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins joining in, where everyone has a place,and where your sense of self and belonging are nurtured and strengthened for the times you must leave and go back to your working world. The study guide at the end of the book helps groups get discussion started in down-to-earth, graphic ways. I've used this book several times to help our church grow in understanding communion and recommend it highly. "Sunday Dinner," together with its companion book, "Remember Who You Are: Baptism, A Model for Christian Life," makes the best studies of these two sacraments that I have found that are usable for church members.
