Comment: I highly recommend this very readable book. It spans the effects of Pre-Raphaelitism in America through the second half of the nineteenth century. It gives solid background information about the main figures involved in this exchange between America and Britain. It is obvious Dr. Casteras has done extensive research sifting through letters and articles from the nineteenth century. The book also includes an examination of American artists working in a Pre-Raphaelite style. This is a shaky topic to consider as these artists were influenced by styles other than Pre-Raphelitism. Although some of these artists have been called American Pre-Raphaelites, it is a precarious label. However, it does seem necessary to the book. Overall: readable and informative!
