Comment: Manes Sperber won the German Book Trade Peace Prize in 1984, the year of his death. His unique capacity to describe living history makes "The Unheeded Warning" a stirring portrayal of life in Vienna in the 20s and in Berlin in the early 30s. He became attached to Alfred Adler's school of Individual Psychology, was for a time quite active in the Hashomer Hatzair (a leftist Zionist pioneering youth movement) and later an energetic Communist Party member in Germany. The book ends with his arrest -and release- in Berlin shortly after the Nazi rise to power, allowing him to see the easiness with which Reds became brownshirts.
