Summary: Suspenseful and scary Hour Before Dark
Comment: The Hour Before Dark is a page turner of a suspense story and Douglas Clegg knows how to build shivers.
The book begins with the murder of Nemo Raglen's father who leaves his house during a storm to look in on something at the smokehouse on the property.
Nemo and other siblings come home after the murder and must now find out what happened to their father. This murder mystery is suspenseful enough, but Mr. Clegg adds another layer of fear.
When Nemo and his brother and sister were kids, they played a dangerous game they called The Dark Game. It had to be played in the hour before dark, but in one instance they played it past dark. That's when something happened to them as children that might answer questions about the present crime.
Is it a killer? Is it a ghost? Is it something worse?
You will have to read this thrilling story to find out. I don't think you will be disappointed. The family dynamics and the mystery of what Nemo and Bruno and Brooke don't know about each other all add up to real dread.
This book is up there with some of the best of horror fiction.

Summary: Outstanding Horror is finally Back
Comment: I don't like to give away plot points and such when writing a review because I hate to know anything about a book when I crack the pages. If you're looking for a synopsis read another review.
I will say that with The Hour Before Dark (and several of his other books) Clegg finds the spine tingling edge that hasn't been seen since the early days of Stephen King. I REALLY didn't want to turn the light off and I jumped at every creak my house made while I waited for sleep. I had a monster under my bed and each shadow in my room was a lurking ghoul.
Read this book! I can't say enough how important Mr. Clegg's work is to returning horror to it's glory days. But when you open the book, do so carefully, you'll never know what you will find inside.

Summary: finished it in two days, it was that good
Comment: Dedicated to Steven King, The Hour Before Dark is a suspenseful mystery that follows the investigation of a murder on Burnley Island and the strange occurrences at Hawthorn Mansion.
What was most enjoyable to me about this novel was that it blended characteristics of both the supernatural and reality, making the reader unaware how the story will really turn out and how the murder actually took place. Clegg brilliantly weaves a tale of intrigue and history at the mansion which the man was murdered at, and the lives of his children while they try to figure out what has happened. It is clever, thought-out, and has all of the necessary elements to create a truly great horror novel.
