Summary: Outstanding work of an outstanding mind
Comment: This is one of three published translated parts of an unfinished ontology Lukacs was working on at the end of his life. Lukacs returned to his critical roots of the 1920's when starting this project, though in a modified way, and much of his writing has the same freshness and insights as his masterpiece History and Class Consciousness. His basic point is that in order to revitalize Marxism it is necessary to develope from it an ontology that could explain labor as the fundamental category of being. He does this by analyzing Hegel and Marx in the other two published parts, not so much from an epistemological point of view but from the position of ontology. The ontology that emerges is founded in becoming rather than being, as change, flux, negation, and movement over stasis, permanence, and immobility (as in traditional ontology from the scholastics or as in Heidegger's work). This revolutionizing of ontology is Lukacs' attempt to make Marxism an interpretation of being--by doing so he is rejecting orthodox Marxist theory and attempting to give historical and dialectical materialism a renewed sense of relevance. It is well worth the trouble to hunt down a copy of it; we can only hope that more of his later works will be published in translation (especially his aesthetics).
