Summary: Well written memories of a cherished but temporary union!
Comment: After having seen the video, I was interested in reading the book upon which the movie had been loosely (it turns out) based. The book and the video take significantly different approaches to Jeroem's rememberances of his "war time" sexual experiences with Walt, a Canadian/American liberation soldier. Of the two media, the autobiographical book, of course, presented a truer view of what transpired for a few brief summer days between Jeroem (the 11 year old Dutch boy) and Walt, his young soldier/liberator?/friend?/seducer. The boy's flights of fantasy contrasted with actual events draw the reader into Jeroem's mind exceptionally well. The inability of the two to easily communicate probably lead to Jeroem's developing unrealistic expectations of the budding relationship. The beautifully filmed movie glossed over the violence associated with the sexual acts experienced between the two, dwelling instead on the more tender moments they shared. The book's description of the Jeroem's search for the "lost" soldier upon his return to Amsterdam reveals the deep impact the soldier's actions and attention had on the impressionable young lad even to the extent of Jeroem's fantazing about abandoning his family and countrymen to be with "his" soldier wherever he went. A truely well written, well paced autobiography. Van Dantzig's memoir is a worthwhile read and highly recommended. Too bad there is no sequal.

Summary: Touching and electrifying
Comment: Like many people I came across this book after having seen the movie, after the movie was not recommended to me by my local video store!
The movie left me wanting so much more so I decided that I must run out and buy the book which I did the next day. I was in two minds about the story, it concerned me at first that the relationship between Walt and Jereon was one of abuse and power , although as I read more into the book and I followed stories on the web I realised it was so much more.
I am still a little hesitant aboout the age difference between Jereon and Walt, but came to realise as the book progressed that Jereon was a willing participant in all that ttranspired. However I feel as though this type of relationship between an adult and a young child while legal and acceptable in some parts of the world is unsettling for me in the western world.
However after reading interviews with RUDI (the author) where he talks of the experiences he had as a child I began to understand the complex feelings and the despair he felt at not just the Loss of Walt but perhaps the loss of his identity through the war.
I definitely enjoyed the book but I continued to imagine Jereon as much older than his tender years and that made it a far more pleasurable read for me!

Summary: Where can I still get this book????????????
Comment: I asked for many book shops and they all said this book is out of stock or out of print, so where else can I buy this book???
