Comment: This book is a must for any K-6 teacher who wants to understand the reading/writing process (along with language acquisition, listening & speaking). Not only does it cover the importance of developing the natural learning process, it gives great ideas about setting up your classroom and structuring your day. Best of all, it goes into detail about which workbook pages to keep, which ones to skip and ready-to-use activities in place of workbooks altogether. Then it covers how to develop a thematic unit(and gives 3 complete examples). In the section on evaluating student work, great examples of performance assessments are provided. All this and a detailed Writing section with assignments ready for Monday morning, too. It's not only for teachers of whole language, it's for teachers who want a good, completely balanced reading program. This book has it all!
