Summary: To correct a fellow reviewer....
Comment: The Hunt For Red October by Tom Clancy is his first novel, and without a doubt his best. Deep in the Atlantic ocean, a Soviet sub lurkes heading west, and with the help of a Catapiller engine, it now lurks with silence. Captain Marko Ramius of the Soviet Navy kills one of his men, and claims that he fell from spilling tea. The reason he head's west is not only to give the good old U.S. of A. a little hello, but to escape the harsh life of the Soviet Union, and also what the state did to his father; sending him to war and eventually dying on the battlefield.
So now comes in Jack Ryan, who is just a analyst of the CIA, and he spots October, and the engine, but he does not know what kind of engine it is, but he has a hunch that they are going to try to attack America. So now the chase is on to find the Red October, get on it, and take it away from the the Soviet Union.
To correct a fellow reviewer, he told another reviewer that the Ryan books go in order from Without Remorse, Patriot Games, and The Hunt For Red October. Close, but no cigar. The books go like this; Without Remorse, Patriot Games, Red Rabbit, and The Hunt For Red October.

Summary: A riveting techno-thriller
Comment: Somewhere in the North Atlantic, a Russian sub breaks away from its patrol route and makes a mad dash for the coast of the United States. Are the Soviets planning a stealth attack or what? The Americans don't have a clue. Oddly enough, neither do the Soviets. The sub's captain, Marko Ramius, is a man with a deep loathing and resentment towards the government of his homeland, and he's planned a spectacular revenge. It falls to a lower-level CIA functionary named Jack Ryan to figure out what's afoot: Ramius and his crew are attempting to defect to the United States, bringing a billion-dollar present with them.
Tom Clancy has churned out dozens of novels since, of descending quality; "Red October" was his first and it's by far his best. He goes into great technical detail describing the workings of a submarine but he explains it so well that any reader can understand what he's saying. His characters aren't very profound, but characterization isn't the main draw here; the hunt and the subsequent chase of Red October by the Americans, who want to keep it and the crew safe, and the Russians, who want to destroy it at any cost, keep us spellbound while turning page after page. Clancy didn't fall into the trap of venting out the political propaganda that spoiled so many of his later books; he keeps "Red October" squarely on target, concentrating on the thrill of the chase, and the actions rockets along non-stop from the first page to the last. If you read only one Clancy novel, this is definitely the one to go with. None of his other books can touch it.

Summary: His Best
Comment: Other reviewers have said it: This is Clancy's best novel. In my own opinion, they are correct. Never again would the pace be so good, the right-wing jingoism so absent and obviously he couldnt plagerize his previous novels for plot points and entire lines of dialogue (Red Storm Rising/Bear And The Dragon anyone?)
The smaller subplots were absolutely delightful. My particular favorites are basically any of the couple of scenes with the battleship USS New Jersey and the mock-attack on one of the Soviet fleets by the Air National Guard A-10 Warthogs.
One side comment to JediMack from Valrico, FL who posted a review earlier. He writes: "Seems that there is debate as to which is the first Jack ryan Book. If Jack is single here and he is married in patriot games, so PG can't be first."
OK, in the chronological world of Jack Ryan, there are 2 books that take place BEFORE Hunt For Red October. First is Without Remorse (a young Jack Ryan has a cameo). After Without Remorse comes Patriot Games. After Patriot Games, comes Hunt, wherein Jack Ryan is indeed (Still!) a married man. Read closely my young Padawan!
In terms of the 'real' world, Hunt of course was published first.
