Summary: This is a new edition! Not the Attwater/Thurston edition!
Comment: While I have not had the opportunity to read this volume edited by Paul Burns in detail, it should be noted that this is a new edition and not the Atwater/Thurston edition put out during the time of Pius XII. In structure and style, it is much more reminiscent of the original Butler's Lives and has reincorporated short reflections at the end of most of the accounts. This volume seems designed to renew the original meditative/reflective aspect of Butler's Lives.

The chief difference between this volume and the original Butler's Lives, as near as I can tell, is that it follows the current calendar of saints, both as to which saints are included and as to when their feast days occur. Also, it incorporates many of the more recent canonizations.

Summary: A good resource on the saints
Comment: This book is well-written and provides interesting short biographies of some of the most famous saints. The book is arranged in a chronological manner, ordering the saints by their feast days.

This book is not a particularly in-depth looks at the saints, however for those with an interest in the important figures in the Catholic church, and the history of the church, this book provides many interesting tidbits.
