Summary: Great, funny gay movie spoof!
Comment: This graphic novel is tongue-in-cheek throughout, and deliciously funny as well as gripping. It is based on a new Jaws-like villain in the form of a condom that poses as a 'normal' prophylactic, then bites off and devours the unsuspecting victim's penis. Starting in true thriller fashion with a 'trailer' showing its firtst victim, the 'film' (Konig even gives us a movie-style 'credits' page at the start) follows the detective hero as he tracks down the monster. The twist is that the detective is gay, and by the end of the book he finds love, or a reasonable facsimile, with a young hustler.
The cast of supporting characters in this book is wonderfully varied, from the university professor who lures his student to a cheap hotel in the hope of seducing her only to become a victim of the condom, to the street hustler who calmly negotiates the price per 'hit' with a sailor who wants to beat him up.
The Killer Condom is the best introduction to Konig's work, as the movie parody style and fast-paced action are more accessible to general audiences than his later, more contemplative works, which focus on analysing gay marriages at various stages of development. This book is a gripping page-turner. Even if you're not crazy about Konig's other works (such as Bull's Balls, Maybe...Maybe Not, etc.), if you like movie parodies, laugh-out-loud comedy and strong plotty detective fun, not to mention Konig's distinctive pen-and-watercolor drawing style (the book is black-and-white, but water-based inks are obviously used), this book is a must-read.
