Summary: A coming of age story.
Comment: When I started the first chapter, I wasn't looking foward to the rest of the The House on Mango Street. The vignettes in the book to me were a bunch of disconnected stories strewn together in a haphazard sort of way. But as I read on, I realized they were interconnected into a beautiful tale about an admirable heroine named Esperanza. I really liked the whole theme of growing up. I was amazed at how Miss Cisneros could write from the viewpoint of a child. So many times when you read a novel about growing up, I feel the author doesn't get the full impact of the child's point of view. I especially liked the author's portrayal of the women and men who live on Mango Street. The women are dominated by men and are put into roles that have them "looking out the window with their chin in their hand waiting for their husbands to arrive home." Although it was a little hard to keep track of all the characters and their stories, I liked the book. It wasn't the best book I ever read but it wasn't the worst one either.

Summary: House on Mango Street puts real life on paper
Comment: Sandra Cisneros' book, The House on Mango Street is full of real life lessons. The story, which is written from a child's point of view, has the ability to open our eyes to the hardships of growing up in a poverty stricken neighborhood in Chicago. Very few books can cover as many themes and subjects as this one. Not only are there several subjects, but subjects that most of us, including myself, don't think about or incounter everyday. When reading The House on Mango Street, the reader will realize that the main characters are dealing with things like crime, poverty, abuse, and a lack of positive influence everyday. To the characters, what seems like everyday life, may strike us as horrible, unfortunate, or depressing. However, these unhappy subjects are part of life for many people and we can all learn from them. Esperanza, the main character, is a young hispanic girl growing up in this atmosphere, her attitude and outlook on things can be inspiring. Rather than accepting what she has been given and living in the ghetto for the rest of her life, she talks about getting out, about not letting a man control her, about making something of herself and finding something better. Esperanza has found that taking the negative, and looking at it as inspiration to form a positive, is what will fuel her to escape life on Mango Street. Even though Esperanza is looking to get out and find something better, she promises that she will not forget where she came from and she will not forget the people who loved her when she was living on Mango Street. Books that have the ability to educate, inspire, and still entertain are hard to come by, but Cisneros has managed to write one of those books. It is a great, "lazy day, easy reading" kind of book. I would recomend it to anyone.

Summary: a neighborhood brought to life
Comment: I greatly enjoyed this mosaic of the people and incidences on Mango Street, where a young Latina girl finally has her first house. Her relationships with her sister and some neighbor girls who are also sisters are true-to-life and even cut across cultural lines when they have their uarrels as young girls always have.

Other stories were a bit saddening, like the pretty young wife whose husband locks her up at home so she won't run around on him, even though she has never given her any reason to believe that she will, except for the fact that she is so beautiful. (Hello -- fire safety!) It's like Cyndi Lauper sang in 1984 "Some boys take a beautiful girl and hide her away from the rest of the world."

This is a great little book, especially when there is not that much available from Latina authors that doesn't mirror the overplayed chick-lit genre. Very good.
