Comment: I read this book for my senior seminar while studying abroad in Rome. I can safely say that it is the worst book I have ever had to read for a class. Not only are the essays obtuse, but the book is horribly edited and translated. The book suffers from schizophrenia (as I'm sure the conference it was taken from does as well); it is not sure whether it wants to be a philosophy text, a history text, an anthropology text, or something else. These fields of study are all related, but there is no central theme in this book (despite what you might expect from the title). This book attempts to be intellectual, but after reading it you can see that this is just a thin veneer covering an ocean of posturing with no real substance.
