Summary: The significance of the writings of Thomas Bulfinch
Comment: In clear and thoughtful prose, Dr. Cleary illuminates both theworks of Thomas Bulfinch and their applicability to contemporaryeducation and life.
Her intimate familiarity with and love of her subject are abundantly illustrated throughout. In detailing the benefits of classical studies, she emphasizes their significance to the modern world. Even in her comments on the life of Bulfinch she frequently relates incidents to still-existent places that can be visited today. The overall thrust of her message is to provide cogent arguments for the sensible introduction of classical mythology into the curriculum of modern schools and colleges, with special attention to Bulfinch's AGE OF FABLE. Always the sensitive scholar, she would have classical education be populist in the best sense, not elitist in the worst sense.
Nothing better illustrates her thrust than the strong connection she makes between the doctrines of Bulfinch and those of John Dewey. The latter's "indirect interest" would have material presented in such a way as to shed light on its contemporary significance -- exactly as Bulfinch would have the classics presented. Dr. Cleary consistently keeps the point in mind throughout her book.
The FOREWORD by Seymour Sarason of Yale University and the PREFACE by Edward George of Texas Tech University add weight to Dr. Cleary's message and while doing so praise her work. Professor George concludes with: "...THE BULFINCH SOLUTION is a rich and useful contribution."
As one who has long been familiar with THE AGE OF FABLE and who for decades has kept it on his shelf as a principal reference, I too laud Dr. Cleary for her entirely modern and valuable commentary on what continues to be one of the most valuable works in its field.
David Russell, Professor Emeritus
