Summary: An Excellent Resource!
Comment: True to its name The Herbal Handbook is the kind of reference book you'll use over and over again. Because it is such a valuable addition to anyone's library, I would also recommend it as an excellent gift book. At first the chapter breakdown may be a bit unfamiliar, since it doesn't read like an encyclopedia (no alphabetical herb listings), but once you use it you'll recognize the wisdom in setting up the book in this manner.

David Hoffman begins with the "actions" herbs have upon the body (diuretic, sedative, expectorant, etc.). 35 are covered. In this way the herbs are grouped together based on their properties. The "action" or property is explained, herbs with these properties are individually listed with parts of the herb that is to be used, how they are collected, indications, combinations, preparations and dosages and their effects on each of the body systems.

The second grouping is body systems (digestive system, respiratory system, etc.), 13 systems discussed. Hoffman overviews each body systems function, its' role in health and wholeness, how herbs work within the body system, their actions, and the maladies of the individual system and their cures.

The layout of actions and systems are cross-referenced providing a more comprehensive presentation than that of individual herb listings. Rather than just learning the herbs and their properties, a more holistic approach is taken, relating the body systems to the herbs' actions, tying both together. If you wish to look up individual herbs you can do so by using the full index in the back of the book.

Aromatherapy, plant chemistry, herb gardens, herbal pharmacy, cooking herbs, along with dye plants, pot-pourris, and becoming an herbalist are the additional topics covered in the remaining chapters. This amazing resource not only tells you how to harvest, but tells you what time of the day to pick, how to dry, what temperature, the types of drying racks, ventilation. You'll also learn how to make a tincture, decoction, infusion, syrup, capsule, bath, ointment, poultice and compress. A few folk and traditional recipes are included, such as the ones for tonic and medicinal wines.

As you can see it covers just about everything. It is a value to beginners and experienced herbalists.

Summary: A great reference book for all Herbalism students!
Comment: The Herbal Handbook by David Hoffmann is a great source of definitions of actions of the most commonly used herbs. Also of interest is the chemistry of plants, the body systems and their recommended herbs, which include methods of preparation for medicinal and cosmetic use.

The incredible amount of information in this book is easy to read. The section on actions is the most comprehensive I have read yet!

This title should be in every Herbalists personal library!
