Summary: Storyline from back of book
Comment: If you enjoy John Jakes this is a must read! Good detailed historical fiction by a master of civil war drama.
From back of book:
Virginia aristocrat and brilliant young doctor, David Preston was a loyal captain in the U.S. Army. But when Virginia seceded, Preston's loyalty was with his native state, even though President Lincoln urged him to stay with the Union. So David left the exotically beautiful Cherokee princess he adored and joined General Stonewall Jackson's Brigade. Amid the carnage of the Brigade's battles, he struggled to preserve life. Then his princess was tried as a spy- and David had to choose between loyalties again.....

Summary: How much more wooden can characters get?
Comment: Slaughter manages to write about some of the most dramatic events in American history without ever evoking a single emotion in the reader. The characters in this book are utterly wooden -- one doesn't even care when Stonewall Jackson dies, though this should be a central point in the plot. The author rarely describes any event from a character's perspective, preferring a distant third-person voice, and thus the reader cannot engage with the events. Deserving of two stars rather than one merely for the depth of research involved, this book is not really worth the reader's time.
