Summary: A critically important read for anyone studying Gorky
Comment: Gorky's epic novel, built around the character of Klim Samgin, a liberal lawyer, is a bleak, comprehensive, and extremely devastating portrait of the Russian intelligensia from the 1870's until the time of the Revolution. Like the bourgeoisie, Gorky's intellectuals are driven by economic desires, conservativism, and hypocracy. Samgin, despite his liberal posture, distances himself from both the revolution of 1905 and then of 1917 in which he is killed by accident.
