Summary: A Spiritual Secret
Comment: The story is of two Israeli boys who travel in the Ugandan jungle while the father of one of them carries on some Israeli military work. They go wandering, against orders of course, and get lost, only to be discovered by gentle folk who do not seem to age.
It seems the boys have arrived in the village of Serach, the mythical sister of Joseph, who --like Elijah-- somehow escaped death, as a gift for telling her father that Joseph hadn't really died.
The most important part of this story is that the village these boys discover contains the 'original Torah.' It is kept in a cave with a mysterious light. The Torah scroll (the Five Books of Moses)is in the back of the cave, and is open. The letters are made of gold, and they dance from word to word.
As many students of religion may be aware, the Hebrew of the Torah is written without vowels--leaving it open to many interpretations. Even spacing is not always clear. This is a most evocative and inspiring physical description of the Torah's potential for interpretation of its many meanings: literal and spiritual.
If only for this chapter alone, this book, or at least this chapter, should be read aloud to anyone, of any religion, who seeks enlightenment.
