Rating: 1
Summary: Very low level of scholarship.
Comment: This ode to Whole Language sounds like it was written for Elementary school students, not elementary school teachers. Some chapters are very slim in content, five chapters are less than eight paragraphs long! There is no index, no research citations, and no biliography.

Aside from references to various titles of children's literature (such as The Great Grumbler and the Wonder Tree) there are several footnotes referring to only one other book, Developing Life-Long Readers, which was also written by Ms. Mooney.

Ms Mooney writes that learning to read is just as natural as learning to speak, and "there will be no set order or way in which this will happen." All you need, according to Ms Mooney, is love and encouragement. Students of the Reading Debate will wonder where the facts are to back up her plan. Apparently the author wasn't able to do any research for this book, say, by stopping in at the local library. This is fine for personal-discovery fantasies like Jonathan Livingston Seagull, but this is supposed to guide elementary school teachers in helping children to read!

This truly seems to be a top-of-one's-head book.

To see a true scholar weigh in on reading and other education topics, try "The Academic Achievement Challenge" by the late Jeanne S. Chall.

Summary: Shared and Guided Reading
Comment: This text is a wonderful resource for any teacher looking toimprove their reading program. Shared reading encourages children toread and write in a supportive and successful environment. This book will enable you to be the best teacher you can be.
