Summary: Successfully pushes the bounds of narrative
Comment: Probably Kostelanetz's best work, Autobiographies consists of around fifty narratives, each of which is an autobiographical form different from all the others in the book. So for example, entries might be "Literary Autobiography" (describing his literary career), "Sentences about myself" (consisting of a large number of discreet sentences about himself), a resume, "Scores" (which consist of RK's scores on various standardized tests), and "Getting Laid in Manhattan" (which describes his sexual encounters in Manhattan). You get the idea.
It's a very smart book that approaches a form we all know (the autobiography) and demonsrates how much potential variability exists within it. If you think about literary forms and like the work of people like William Gass, Don Barthelme, or Robert Coover, I recommend this book. If you're looking for an straightforward read that you won't need to think about, I recommend you stay off RK entirely.
