Summary: A Perfect Introduction to God's Law
Comment: Greg Bahnsen has written a introductory masterpiece in this book. The chapters are short, the jargon is lay-oriented, and the content biblical.
Here is just a sampling of the topics discussed:
(1) God's Law is a transcript of His holiness on a creaturly level.
(2) God's Law is not against the gospel, but for it.
(3) God has not abrogated His Law with the coming of Christ, but has affirmed it, since the reason Christ died anyway was to fulfill our failure to meet the Law's requirements.
(4) One of the central aspects of the New Covenant mentioned in the OT (and in the NT in Rom. 6) is that God will, in the writing of the Law in the hearts of Christians and the giving of the Holy Spirit, enable believers to actually obey God's commands.
(5) With the coming of Christ, the ceremonial aspects of the Law are now no longer binding, since their function was to point forward to the work and ministry of the Savior.
(6) God's Law in its civil aspects not only applied to ancient Israel, but is the standard for political and social Law for all society (cf. Deut. 4:6-8). Thus, what required the death penalty (i.e., what warranted the status of a capital crime) for them must also be so for us if we are to uphold the righteous standards which God has revealed for society.
Bahnsen also deals with many more topics, including critiques and objections to the views presented therein.
Highly recommended. Perhaps the best introduction to God's Law and the Christian available today.
"This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome" (1 Jn. 5:2-3).

Summary: This book has the potential to shatter your Comfort Zone.
Comment: What authority does the Law have in the life of the New Testament believer? The answer may disturb you. It did me. Be forewarned. Dr. Bahnsen is not writing comic-book dialog here! This is tough stuff. It demands your attention. It demands thought. But the rewards are great. This book is a blessing. This is the definitive biblical counter to situation ethics and moral relativism. If you are a Christian, you really ought to consider it your duty to find out what the Bible (both Testaments) has to say about issues of morality. What does it really mean to "love your neighbor"? My wager is that most of us Christians don't really know.
