Summary: Excellent, concise Marxist analysis of psychology.
Comment: Mr. Lethbridge employs a clear writing style and a firm grasp of the dialectical materialist method to describe the evolution of modern American psychology from the behaviorist school earlier this century to humanistic psychology on one hand and to cognitive psychology on the other, the dominant trends in the U.S. today. The author explains the materialist and dialectical approach to key questions of psychology, such as what is a human and what is the self, and shows its superiority over the humanistic and cognitive approaches to these issues. Mr. Lethbridge has studied the work of Russian psychology in depth and refers to it throughout in his book, particularly the writing and work of Vygotsky and Luria. A key idea in the author's arguments and explanations is the problem of reductionism, the attempt to explain a complex process by reducing it to a simpler one, such as explaining human behavior as just animal behavior. This theme is well explained throughout the book, making the work a fine example of dialectical materialist methodology as well as an excellent introduction to psychology.
