Summary: Carmel for all!
Comment: This is an excellent book for people who desire to deepen their life of prayer and increase in knowledge of the Discalced Carmelite Order with their enduring legacy to Roman Catholic spirituality. Written in 1953 in France, Paul-Marie of the Cross, O.C.D. presents a valid and seemingly timeless exposition of the best aspects of Discalced Carmelite spirituality that is as relevant today as it was when first written.

Kathryn Sullivan, R.S.C.J. did a fine job translating this text in 1959. The Institute of Carmelite Studies (Washington, DC.) revised and edited her translation under the direction of Steven Payne, O.C.D. - he also wrote the preface to this edition.

This book is much more than a brief history of the Carmelite tradition and the Discalced reform movement led by St. Teresa of Jesus (Avila) and St. John of the Cross. It offers an easy to follow spiritual theology of the great saints of the order and highlights key insights that can be easily applied to ones life of prayer.

Surely this book is not only for Carmelites! Every Christian -lay, religious, clerical-would greatly benefit from the profound spiritual wisdom to found in midst of these pages.

This last paragraph to be found on p. 83 sums it up beautifully:

"Carmelite spirituality is immanent and transcendent. To an élan toward the summits it brings a deep psychological insight and keen realism. That is why during all these centuries it has been able to guide souls to the top of the holy mountain. In spite of their wide diversity, Carmel makes it possible for all souls to realize their highest and most necessary vocation: Vivere Deo-To live for God."

Summary: The History of the Spirituality of the Discalced Carmelites
Comment: This book discusses the ancient beginnings of Carmel with Elijah, the prophet; what makes Carmel different from other spiritual traditions; the various aspects of the rule of Carmel; three primarily known Carmelites, St. Teresa, St. John of the Cross, and St. Therese; and finally the various forms of Carmelite prayer and meditation. An excellent overview.
