Summary: Good overall
Comment: Praise: This excellent book points out the dangers (both legal and tactical) of armed self-defense. The arguments are compelling, the conclusions are reasonable... a very important work for those who might use a firearm against another.
Criticism: it's a little dated, which affects the discussion of firearm selection somewhat, and which affects the discussion of laws quite a bit. Also, as the author is a police officer, some of his positions are standard law-enforcement doctrine. (For instance, he states several times that carrying concealed weapons is a priviledge, not a right. Um, ever heard of the Bill of Rights? That was disapointing)
But overall, it's a fine book, and I'm glad I bought it. I'll read more Ayoob.

Summary: A little too weak.
Comment: I found this book to be interesting, and anyone who does not have a lot of exposure to firearms, and is considering owning one for defense should read it. But coming from a lifelong exposure to guns, and a circle of friends who line up on their 21st birthdays to get carry permits, I found little of use in this book. I was expecting some tips on weapon and caliber selection, practical usage of firearms in a defensive situation, multiple target engagement tactics, and tactical reloads, with a little discussion of legal and moral implications of self defense. What I got was 90% legal and moral issues raised, 5% complaining about people who are opposed to open carry, and 5% practical usage information.
Most of what is said in this book is common sense, and because of the nature of justifiable homicide it's not much help with the legal aspects, as they vary from state to state, and year to year. For someone looking for good information about what to carry and how to use it, I would recommend "Semi-Automatic Pistol in Police Service and Self Defense" by this same author. That book still isn't that great, but MUCH more informative on the practical aspects of carrying a weapon. It covers everything not related to the moral and legal aspects of self-defense that was in this book.
Rating: 5
Summary: Must-read if carrying concealed
Comment: I believe anyone who is carrying a concealed firearm, or even just keeps one at home for self-defense, has a duty to read this book. It discusses realistically how one should modify one's behavior and actions when keeping or carrying firearms for self-defense. It also discusses what will happen to you before, during and after an incident in which you must draw, and possibly fire, a weapon to protect yourself.
