Title: About Teaching Mathematics: A K-8 Resource by Marilyn Burns ISBN: 0-941355-25-X Publisher: Pearson Learning Pub. Date: August, 2000 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $34.50 |

Rating: 5
Summary: A great K-8 Resource
Comment: Marilyn Burns' 23 years' experience teaching math is found in this great resource book. The first section is organized in NCTM strands: measurement, probability and statistics, geometry, logic, patterns and functions, and number. The second section (a little less than half the book) is about teaching arithmetic: number concepts, place value, addition and subtraction, mulitplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. Each concept has whole class lessons, independent activities (menu), and assessing understanding.
This is a teacher resource, not a curriculum book. Burns' approach is half-way in between the two poles of math education: algorithmic math and conceptual math. Her point of view is "practical," with the teacher in mind.

Summary: Great math book
Comment: Excellent.
Great ideas for non-traditional approach to math. I use this book in my special education class of low-cognitively functioning 9-12th graders.

Comment: Excellent!
I was looking for a long time for a book to help me understand why children might not succeed in math and what can be done about it. This is that book. It is different from other books that just help explain math exercises without addressing the reason why children might not succeed in certain math concepts. then it gives alternative ways of bringing these concepts to the student. If teachers would use just this book the level of math ability in American children will pass that of Asian students.
