Summary: A better effort
Comment: Once again, Laura Antoniou takes us into the world of The Marketplace. This time, we follow Robin, a woman who gives up her familiar life in the hope that she can follow her dream of becoming an owned slave.

I found this book more readable than the first, probably because there's less of a focus on sex and more of a focus on the actual training of Robin in the ways of slavehood. We follow her struggles and her uncertainty and of course, we are teased again with the strange sexuality of Chris Parker.

I'd already been anaesthetised to Antoniou's typographical errors (what does she DO with these books? whip them up on a typewriter?), but they are still kind of annoying.

I feel somewhat ambivalent about The Slave--it's not the best book I've ever read, but it's not the worst either. I found that it held my attention for the duration and the temptation to read "just one more" chapter kept overwhelming me. Worth a read and probably a better introduction to the lifestyle than The Marketplace

Summary: Left me dying for more...
Comment: Having recently started wondering through the world of erotica, I started a search for a good book to introduce me to BDSM. Before reading, I niavely thought it was all about tying someone up and giving the pleasure through this. Now I see how wrong I was. Not only did it give me an honest glimpse into the real S&M, but the story line also caught my interest. I started with The Marketplace and after reading that, went out and bought the rest of the series, including hte Academy. I have lent the series out to family members, friends and even men along the way. I highly recomend this book and the others in The Series.

Summary: The best book of the best series on BDSM
Comment: For anyone who is into BDSM or who is curious about what motivates people who are, this book is the best exploration of the mindset of a submissive. Antoniou very cleverly uses her central conceit - a Marketplace of willing slaves who sell themselves into multi-year contracts to wealthy Owners (under which contracts the slaves are eventually compensated) - to explore the psychological aspects of service and being property. Antoniou is herself most interested in - okay, let's be blunt, aroused by - slaves whose behavior needs to be corrected, so all of her books are filled with slaves who are flawed or are otherwise struggling to live up to someone's (usually, Sgt. Parker's) exceedingly high expectations. The Slave is her best-selling book, in part because the curious find the title titillating, but mainly because she lays out Robin's whole journey, complete with the backstory from her youth, and proceeding through her training by Parker and her experiences being owned.

Although this is the best book in the series, I would strongly urge anyone who is interested in it to read the series from the beginning. It is much more satisfying that way.
