Summary: Beginner's Luck . . .
Comment: This is a spectacularly attractive book. Before I opened it, it already appealed to my curiosity and hopefulness. After I opened it, my curiosity and hopefulness were gratified, with one small reservation noted below.
The author made a number of good decisions in the course of writing the book:
1. The light, breezy style is perfect for the new user.
2. The level of technical detail is helpful without being overwhelming.
3. The table of contents offers lots of detail and makes it easy to browse the contents and jump in right where help is needed.
4. The index is well-suited to the contents with an appropriate number of entries and cross entries. This is very important in a book of this type.
In reading the book, I could find only one decision that I might have quarreled with. Chapter 2, "Configuring Word," is an extremely important chapter.
My concern is that some readers may decide to skip this chapter, not realizing that the second half of the chapter will save them countless hours of heartache and frustation. I think I would have tried harder to grab the reader's attention at the start of Chapter 2, warning him or her that Word's behavior can seem downright bizarre if you don't take time to read the entire chapter. The good news is that this is a short chapter and most readers probably WILL read it in its entirety. I hope so, because it will be time well-spent.
Well, that's a small concern. The book is an excellent introduction to the world's most widely-used word processing program.
