Summary: But as a work of historical significance, it's a 5 star.
Comment: Don't let the average rating discourage you from buying this book. The author, Maj. Calhoun Benham, was neither an original writer nor proficient instructor in marksmanship. The information found therein may be found in other contemporary works as plagarism was common among military theorists of the era.

However, this work is significant in that it is one of the two issued by Richmond during the war on marksmanship (and it's a five star in this respect). Benham's manual, written after Cleburne trained his division, was used within the Army of Tennessee (the other was by Gen. Cadmus Wilcox and used to train the Army of Northern Virginia). As such, it deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who is interested in the Civil War Confederate sharpshooter and how he was trained (the two manuals weren't very different). Besides mundane instructions as to the individual parts of the weapon and how they function, instructions are provided on the principles of marksmanship, weapons maintenance, dry firing exercises and most importantly, range estimation. While the instructions for range estimation is still valid, it is similar to that taught to artillerymen of the period.

I would hazard to guess that even modern enthusiasts of sniping will find this book interesting. Thank you Joe Bilby for bringing back this classic and it's much easier to buy it than going to Richmond to read it like I did.
