Summary: Excellent book, well-written!
Comment: Love the music, loved the book.

Summary: Great for 5th graders
Comment: I am a Salsa fanatic and was very excited to buy this book to read the story of perhaps the greatest Sonero ever. Turns out, the English version is made for 5th graders. It is so hard to read if you are an avid reader, very little imagination and horrible form. If you like reading, this book will seem so simple. I feel it loses a lot in the translation and this is evident from the many grammatical mistakes, such as words used in the wrong tense.

I finished the book in about a day mostly because I was just really curious about his life, also the fact it's only 116 pages or so with a lot of pictures didn't hurt. However, the biggest flaw is that it is mostly the story of the author (his son) and the relationship with his father. Since it is his illegitimate son the family withheld a lot of information. This leads to many vague stories about him and goes into no detail about his early life or death. It pretty much picks up when he is in NY and it is just some colorful stories told to the author by friends of Hector. It was too much about him and the relationship with his father to go into detail about Hector. The fact the family blackballed him form most of the information lead him to take this approach. I would have liked more about Hector and what made him tick, then how his son was forced to hardly spend time with him.

If you saw the play, which I did twice, you got a lot more information. The one good aspect about the book is the many references to Salsa's golden era. To hear mention of his many talents and all the greats of that era. I will read the Spanish version and I recommend you not even try this one, unless you don't speak Spanish. I gave it two starts only because its Hector.

Summary: A Little more desired
Comment: The authors of this book seem to scan and summarize the life of whom many consider, including myself, to be the best salsa singer of all time. Hector LaVoe is a character of mystery, humor, tragedy, and intrigue. I wanted to learn more about why he did the things he did and why so many unfortunate destinies followed him and ultimately destroyed him. I also wanted to know more about his childhood which this book leaves out. I think a little more of this book could have focused of his musical and professional developement more thouroughly.
