Summary: The Definitive Account
Comment: As a member of the generation first turned onto The Beatles 40 years ago, this is the definitive account of the year-long process that went into breaking The Beatles in America, with a good deal of material not generally known. Spizer documents the story with great detail but in an entertaining way. Even better, the book is visually dazzling, with rare pictures, documents, label reproductions, etc. And it's not just an egghead book for Beatles scholars. Anyone who's interested in The Beatles' historic conquest of America will find something to like about this book. As we said back then, it's fab!
Rating: 1
Summary: Ponderous!
Comment: I borrowed this voluminous, joyless dead whale of a book from a colleague and am very glad not to have spent the 50 bucks it would have required me to lug it home from a book store. Spizer is a lawyer and while he may be an effective advocate in his briefs, a briefer account of the time in question would have been most welcome. For the die-hard Beatlemaniac perhaps, but not for me .. no, no, no!

Summary: Bruce Spizer does it again!
Comment: There's a reason why every die-hard Beatles fan must have every book by Bruce Spizer in their collection. It's because they are that good! Through his previous books, Spizer has earned his reputation as the leading authority on Beatles U.S. recordings and the background and history of those recordings. Spizer doesn't rehash what has been written a thousand times before. He does his research, checks his facts and puts it all together in a beautifully illustrated package that Beatles fans not only appreciate having on their book shelf, but refer to time and time again.
The Beatles Are Coming: The Birth of Beatlemania in America is no exception. Spizer's exhaustive research and interviews with many of the original cast of characters who were there from the beginning make this a book that is appealing not only to the die-hard Beatles fans and collectors, but also to the more casual fan - the fan who remembers being caught up in Beatlemania in the 60s and who remembers that time with fond memories. The credits and acknowledgments read like a "who's who" of Beatles insiders, fans and collectors who have contributed information, documents, photographs and items from their collections for inclusion to assure that this book provides the most comprehensive story of Beatlemania in America.
The book opens with the arrival of The Beatles in New York on February 7, 1964, then goes back to February 7, 1963 to chronicle everything that happened to reach that eventual day. Spizer debunks many of the myths that have become standard Beatle lore over the past 40 years and explains the actual facts behind the myths and legends.
The illustrations are exceptionally reproduced (Spizer self-publishes his books to assure the highest quality for book buyers). Here you can see original magazine articles about The Beatles from Time, Life, TV Guide and Newsweek, Beatles 45s on the VeeJay, Swan and Capitol Records labels, reproductions of original promotional material and letters, picture sleeves from records, telegrams, cancelled checks, music charts, bubble gum cards and photographs galore! The narrative is exceptionally interesting and the details are amazing. You can read it cover to cover or scan the book to read at your leisure. The book is indexed, so the reader can find facts fast.
Spizer's experience as an attorney in his "day job" shows in the level of detail in this book. He makes sure that he gets it right.
The die-hard fans already know that they must have all of Spizer's books. For the more casual fan, if you're only going to buy one Beatles book this year, make it Bruce Spizer's The Beatles Are Coming! The Birth of Beatlemania in America. You won't be sorry.
