Summary: Literary Junk Food
Comment: So sickeningly sweet, this story is smothered in syrupy schmaltz. Like an unsatisfying meal it left me with a bad taste and two questions: where's the beef?; and why on earth did I eat the whole thing? I did learn that when considering a book purchase it is a prudent to read more than the first few reviews. Doing so may have saved my time and expense budget from this piece of drivel.
I have nothing against simple writing and have enjoyed petite and profound pearls in the 'wisdom' genre such as J.L. Seagull and the Tao of Pooh. In the present case, I was buoyed by review comments and expected to savour some snippets of esoteric or metaphysical sagaciousness. However after the first few pages, I rightly suspected this dish would not be so spiced. I grant that young readers may find some flavour in this tale but those with a mature intellect will find little more than tasteless platitudes, exposition, and juvenile moralism. Judgmental, violent, and rather mean-spirited, the protagonist is wholly unpalatable with a decided dearth of compassion, understanding, and forgiveness. Come to think of it, all of the characters are nothing but cliched one-dimensional caricatures. Overall the story is a bland souffle - light, fluffy, and lacking in substance.
And what is there to be had for 'wisdom'? Let's see - we learn: meat-eaters (at least the four-legged variety) are to be hunted down and killed; tips should not be left to overly friendly waitresses; women are generally more trouble than they are worth; a little lust leaves a leaching soul; women in scarlet dress are to be avoided, etc.
Whoah!...........Deep?..........Gag me with a spoon!
I could but shan't go further. Suffice it to say that if you are hungry for true wisdom and are not a naive closed-minded pre-teen Christian, let this course go past your plate.

Summary: The Wisdom of Shepherds!
Comment: The Wisdom of Shepherds is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I think I ran across it here in the reviews and bought it on a whim. Good story, very readable. It has a strong plot, and I always enjoy that. It makes some great points about life as well. I found the characters to be irresistably likable. The story is very simple and good natured and anyone of any age can enjoy it. I guess it's sort of a fable. Anyway, I truly liked it, and I highly recommend The Wisdom of Shepherds.

Summary: Just ok
Comment: This book feels like it's written on a fifth grade level, and the writing is full of cliches and false sounding dialogue. I was enticed by all the good reviews, but I ended up being very disappointed.
