Comment: A very good way (albeit expensive) to get started with Maya. I always found that the problem with other books, is that they were too wordy/verbose. You get bored and distracted by all the talk. Here its literally all step-by-step, short and to the point (with very succinct explanations throughout, that do the job as well as any paragraph would). You make fast progress, and learn just as much, while also leaving enough room for personal expression.

Comment: This book is put out by Alias-Wavefront and it's used as a textbook in the Digital Animation classroom. The tutorials demonstrate the basic concepts and functions of Maya.
The pitfall we had in class was that people mis-read the instructions because they lost their place on the page. Also the 3 version had alot of glitches.
Sometimes the authors forget they are talking to someone who is just learning Maya instead of someone who knows what they're doing and they write something that the reader may not understand. Especially when things get complicated.
For example when you have to "set driven key", it gets hairy. But, just re-read it over and over again until you understand it. You'll pick it up.

Comment: My boyfriend bought me this book for my birthday and it's the best gift I've ever gotten. Even though all you are doing is their tutorials that are already laid out in the book, you learn soooo much from this book. It is the BEST maya book I have ever read and is the one single book that I recommend if you are seriously trying to learn maya. Its got great pictures to help you along and has got awesome explainations of why everything is important and what function it serves. Buy this book!!!
