Summary: Hardly brilliant, perhaps only a hiatus in her long carrer
Comment: Chicago Loop 1976 -78
These are black and white "almost" 5x7" contact prints (the original negs are 5x7") showing patterns in buildings with long lenses, sometimes with shadows. Basically - form, shape, volume and space with Chicago buildings exclusively.
This portfolio is a segment in her life as an artist and is not her typical image making. She produces this set of images 10 years after graduating from the Institute of Design with a MSc. I have seen some of the work she produced at the ID and it is far better than this - much more articulated, almost sarcastic and quite intelligent. In fact, it is based on her overall work and except this portfolio hat I consider Barbara Crane one of the most achieved photographic artists of the 20th century.
None of these images suggest anything in specific as far as I'm concerned. These images are simple, almost an assignment for a more or less advanced photography class, perhaps even a poor Bachelors dissertation. To tell you the truth, this is the variety of imagery which a good photographer knows he or she can make and tries to stay away form. Hardly brilliant, perhaps only a hiatus in her long and fertile career as artist.
